Sensational large mug / tankard in the Monte Sol pattern, designed by Susan Williams-Ellis in the mid-1960s. A stunning paisley-based pattern in bold green and blue, with wide flat handle. An exceptional, rarely seen piece.

While on holiday in Ibiza, the rich colours of the surroundings and all things Moorish inspired Williams-Ellis to doodle one day at breakfast using only felt tip pens. The result was a paisley-based motif with pear-drops, cogs and crenallations. The pattern proved very popular on storage and spice jars in green/blue and turquoise/lilac colourways, after only a few years however Portmeirion declared the pattern discontinued. With a remarkable turn of heart, however, the design was revamped and printed on a citron (deep lime green) glaze, re-marketed as 'Marrakesh' in 1970.
