About Robert Stewart

Robert Stewart (14 April 1924 – February 1995), the Scottish designer and artist, was Head of Printed Textiles at The Glasgow School of Art and later becoming Head of the Design School and Deputy Director. A contemporary of Lucienne Day and one of the few designers she admired. A prolific worker, Stewart produced paintings, tapestries, graphics, ceramics and murals but it is his textile designs that have been the most influential, in particular those produced by Liberty, Pringle and Donald Brothers in the 1950's. Stewart and Day dominated the design field at that time, with Libertys and Heals having a pact that Stewart would design exclusively for Libertys while Day designed for Heals.
