Mark to base: "TIVOLI"   DESIGNED BY SUSAN WILLIAMS-ELLIS   PORTMEIRION POTTERY   Stoke-on-Trent   Made in ENGLAND   3423

Dated: 11/64

Tivoli was a transfer pattern that could be cut down to fit any shape of pottery. Susan Williams Ellis was inspired by a visit to the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen and created a very graphic pattern of squares, circles, diamonds and stars. Originally created in bright colours of pink and blue / violet and grey / red and orange, two softer versions of blue and brown / turquoise and olive green were subsequently produced. Launched in early 1964, the design on the new Serif shape caught the attention of many admirers but it never sold in large quantities and so the design was only produced for a few years, therefore making it scarce today.
